What's at Southlands for students?

STUDENTS have always received a warm welcome at Southlands, whether they be at the University of York or the University of York St John.

There is a lot of student accommodation in the area around the church so it is a convenient church at which to worship.

We are a friendly church and there’s a lot going on.

Volunteering opportunities

For those who want to get involved in the life and witness of the church there are a number of volunteering opportunities ...

  • Southlands Junior Club – You might want to work with children of junior school age through our Junior Club which offers a combination of organised games, craftwork, Bible teaching and free time on Friday evenings.
  • Southlands Young Church – There are also opportunities to join a rota to help lead different age groups in Young Church on Sunday mornings.
  • Messy Church – We are working with St Chad’s Church to lay on Messy Church every couple of months or so on Saturdays from 14:00 to 16:00, as a joint project alternating between the two churches. See our Messy Church pages (in the drop-down menus for Church groups and Children and youth) for the latest information and news.
  • Kids Holiday events – There are opportunities to work with children in a 3½-hour event in most school holiday periods.
  • Uniformed groups – There are also opportunities to work with uniformed groups … Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers or Cub Scouts.

There are opportunities for talented young musicians to assist in worship either as a group or, in the case of pianists and organists, on a rota. A really good pianist or organist could command a fee.

For further information about these groups or about other activities within the life of the church please contact Bob Lawrence on York 639231, or email him at
