  • Empowered by God's Spirit, our mission is to demonstrate our love for God through Jesus Christ, our love for each other and God's love for the world.

    July 2019

WELCOME to the website for Southlands Methodist Church in the historic city of York.

If you live in York or you are visiting our great city you will be very welcome to join us for worship (at 10:30 every Sunday, except on July 14 when we have a Circuit Celebration at Acomb, starting at 11:00). We are only five minutes or so outside the city walls on the road which heads out towards Bishopthorpe.

    Room hire

Rooms are available for hire in our premises at quite reasonable rates. In particular, there is availability during the day on Tuesdays and Fridays. For details of rooms, including photos and hire charges, click on the "Room Hire" drop-down menu above. Our "Calendar" pages will show which rooms are in use and when.

    Holiday Kids Club

Our 15th annual holiday kids club takes place this summer, running from 9:30 to 12:00 for five days in the week starting Monday, July 29.

It is a spy-themed week exploring the story of Moses and there will be lots of fun with crafts, games, songs and story time.

There is also a snack mid-way through the morning (popcorn and fruit).

It costs £5 per child for the week. It is for children of primary school age and more information can be obtained along with access to an online booking form if you email southlands.church@gmail.com

    Community Cafe

Planet Food, which aims to do its bit to cut food waste by creating great meals using food which would otherwise be thrown out by supermarkets, launched a community cafe at Southlands at the beginning of the year and this seems to be going very well.

The cafe runs every Thursday from 10:30 to 14:00 and "customers" are invited to "pay as you feel".

    Working with artists

We are working with a number of artists as we develop our building so that as well as providing a place of Methodist worship and space for community activities, we can become a hub for the arts in the city.

Our partners, Seek Art School (www.seekartschool.co.uk), are offering workshops and classes through the summer term. Although Seek are new in York, Colin Black, who is co-director of Seek has been a senior lecturer at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh for nearly 25 years.

The church is offering art studio accommodation on the premises in addition to our normal activities and those of local community groups and  outside organisations.

We are also 'home' to Prima Choral Artists and their choirs.

    Our calling

At Southlands we believe we have a special calling to work in the community in which we are set, including actively witnessing for our Lord and maintaining a programme of work with children and young people, young adults and older people in the area.

    Groups and activities

These are some of the groups and activities on offer at Southlands ...

    • the Southlands Singing Group
    • uniformed groups for girls and for boys
    • a week-long holiday kids club in the summer holidays
    • a fellowship group for older members
    • a regular weekly prayer group called Concern
    • men's activities
    • a walking group
    • support for various charities.
    • occasional Bible study groups over a set number of weeks

Explore the pages on this website to find out more about what we are up to and how God is leading us. Better still, come and visit us to share in worship and chat with our folk.

You are welcome to come along to any of the groups or activities which are of interest to you - and if you want to get involved in helping to run any of these activities, volunteering for charity work or offering a musical talent, speak to our church leaders.

    Our premises

At first sight our premises are typical of those built in the Victorian era, but we have a modern, welcoming worship centre, a useful suite of meeting rooms and a community centre which is home to most of our work with children and young people.

    Visiting groups

Church groups visiting York, or organisations planning one-day conferences, are invited to try Southlands hospitality. Our catering team can provide lunches and teas on the premises by prior arrangement. Contact room bookings secretary Wyn Lawrence (tel York 639231), or email her on wyn@southlandsmethodist.org.uk.
