2012 Holiday Kids Club success

2012 Kids Club

THIS year's Holiday Kids Club with its Olympics theme got under way on Monday, 23rd July, when 62 youngsters came along to enjoy the fun at Southlands.

There were ten more places available this year compared with last year, but all were booked up within a week of the booking forms being made available. In the end attendances varied between 58 and 64 children on the five mornings the club functioned and a record total of 70 different children came along.

Principal organiser Naomi Whittaker was particularly pleased to see about 25 Kids Club children - many of them accompanied by parents - at morning service on the Sunday, which took the form of a lively Kids Club celebration.

The title this year was On Your Marks and the five week-day morning sessions were based on the Olympic values of determination, excellence, courage, inspiration and respect, as demonstrated by the life of Jesus.

The theme for the first day was determination, and this was illustrated with action songs, fashion designs, a hurdles exercise, doughnut challenge, games and a film clip about the temptations of Christ.

A similar pattern was used for the rest of the week, with excellence portrayed through a weight-lifting activity with "Crazy Christine"; equality through a bucket of sweets which needed to be shared out; courage with "Crazy Christine" on a BMX bike; and inspiration as she had a go at disco dancing.

There was no charge for the kids attending, thanks to a £400 grant from City of York Council and there was even a mid-morning snack each day.

Kids in the Red, Green and Blue groups vied with each other to be champions in this year's Penny Drive. By the end of the week 42.8 kg of 1p and 2p coins had been contributed and a total of £124 was sent off to Christian Aid to pay for a teacher for two months and provide books and uniforms for four children for one year through a project in Bangladesh.

A team of 23 adults ran the different activities for the week.
