Messy Church

Messy Church and Southlands

THE next Messy Church event in South Bank, York, will take place on Sunday, 3rd December, at St Chad's, and will take the form of a Messy Christingle.

Our most recent Messy Church event took place at Southlands on Saturday, 7th October, and attracted a good number of children and adults as we looked at the theme of "shining for Jesus".

The children were able to make potato batteries and silhouette jam jars, flower mandala light catchers, handprint sunshine pictures and chocolate apple wedges. A torch without batteries featured in the presentation.

The previous Messy Church event on Saturday, 22nd July, was a 'first' for us, taking the form of a Sporty Picnic, which we had hoped to hold on Little Knavesmire. It had to be moved into St Chad's Church, in Campleshon Road, after heavy downpours made the ground very soggy.

A big space was created in the church and the afternoon started with several parachute games. These were followed by a series of races using Hebrews 12:1 as the key to the event.

After a tug-o-war competition in the vicarage garden, it was time for the picnic for which the garden was bathed in hot sunshine.

On 20th May more than 70 children and adults joined in the fun at another Messy Church afternoon at Southlands when the theme was Who is the Holy Spirit? On that occasion we started with some games and a Superheroes wall quiz, plus a badge-making activity, before moving into craft activities, with seven to choose from. This was followed by worship, before everyone went through to the community centre for food.

The idea behind Messy Church

Messy Church aims to provide a time when families can come together and enjoy being together, making things together, eating together and celebrating God together. And it's free, although we would welcome donations to help us meet the costs involved.

We think it's the sort of thing that appeals to today's families with the emphasis on just being messy and bringing the community together to focus on Christ while showing God's love through Christian hospitality.

It provides an excellent opportunity to reach out to families who are not regular churchgoers and would not have the opportunity to meet with Christ in their daily lives.

All children attending should be accompanied by an adult.
