  • Empowered by God's Spirit, our mission is to demonstrate our love for God through Jesus Christ, our love for each other and God's love for the world.

    October 2018

WELCOME to the website for Southlands Methodist Church in the historic city of York.

If you live in York or you are visiting our great city you will be very welcome to join us for worship (at 10:30 every Sunday). We are only five minutes or so outside the city walls on the road which heads out towards Bishopthorpe.

    Room hire

Rooms are available for hire in our premises at quite reasonable rates. In particular, there is availability during the day on Tuesdays. For details of rooms, including photos and hire charges, click on the "Room Hire" drop-down menu above. Our "Calebdar" pages will show which rooms are in use and when.

    Free 'Santa's Socks' workshop

We are offering a great opportunity to join Donna Maria Taylor, one of our resident artists, at a free workshop to make a sock for a worthwhile local charity in an informal relaxed setting at Southlands on Tuesday, 23rd October. Drop in any time between 1.00pm and 4.00pm and you will find all the materials you need for your creation. You can even bring your own materials if you have a specific idea of your own.

Leaflets about the Santa's Sock project can be found on this website by clicking on the News drop-down menu and clicking on Posters.

    Working with artists

This is one example of how we are working with artists as we develop our building so that as well as providing a place of Methodist worship and space for community activities, Southlands is aiming to become a hub for the arts in the city.

Our partners, Seek Art School (www.seekartschool.co.uk), are offering workshops and classes through the autumn term. A taster session held on August 30 attracted about 40 people. Although Seek are new in York, Colin Black, who is co-director of Seek has been a senior lecturer at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh for nearly 25 years.

The church is also offering art studio accommodation on the premises in addition to our normal activities and those of local community groups and outside organisations.

We are also 'home' to Prima Choral Artists and their choirs.

    Our calling

At Southlands we believe we have a special calling to work in the community in which we are set, including actively witnessing for our Lord and maintaining a programme of work with children and young people, young adults and older people in the area.

    Groups and activities

These are some of the groups and activities on offer at Southlands ...

    • the Southlands Singing Group
    • a popular Junior Club for children
    • uniformed groups for girls and for boys
    • a week-long holiday kids club in the summer holidays
    • a 3½-hour kids event in most school holiday periods
    • a fellowship group for older members
    • men's activities
    • a walking group and
    • support for various charities.
    • occasional Bible study groups over a set number of weeks

Explore the pages on this website to find out more about what we are up to and how God is leading us. Better still, come and visit us to share in worship and chat with our folk.

You are welcome to come along to any of the groups or activities which are of interest to you - and if you want to get involved in helping to run any of these activities, volunteering for charity work or offering a musical talent, speak to our church leaders.

    Our premises

At first sight our premises are typical of those built in the Victorian era, but we have a modern, welcoming worship centre, a useful suite of meeting rooms and a community centre which is home to most of our work with children and young people.

    Visiting groups

Church groups visiting York, or organisations planning one-day conferences, are invited to try Southlands hospitality. Our catering team can provide lunches and teas on the premises by prior arrangement. Contact room bookings secretary Wyn Lawrence (tel York 639231), or email her on wyn@southlandsmethodist.org.uk.
